Starting split from our Iowa budget planner. Your priorities should move it: spend more on your top 3, less everywhere else.

How much does a wedding cost in Iowa?

The average Iowa wedding costs about $21,000, according to The Knot's state figures as reported by SoFi (2026). That is well below the national average of $34,200 from The Knot 2026 Real Weddings Study (10,474 couples married in 2025). The average wedding had about 117 guests.

Your guest count is the biggest lever. Food, drinks, chairs, linens, invitations and favors all grow with every name on the list, and so does the size of venue you need.

How to make your budget work

1. Pick your top 3 priorities

Food? Photos? A packed dance floor? Spend more there and save everywhere else. This one decision makes every later choice easier. Our planning roadmap walks you through it.

2. Ask family before you sign anything

Ask privately what, if anything, parents plan to give, so your total is real before you put down deposits.

3. Keep a buffer

Set aside about 4% for surprises: overtime, extra rentals, tips and the things nobody remembers until the week of.

4. Track every deposit and due date

The free budget planner tracks estimates vs. real costs and shows every payment coming due, so nothing sneaks up on you.

5. Compare local vendors

Get at least two quotes per category. Browse Iowa venues, photographers, DJs and caterers, and ask them questions right from their listings.

Questions couples ask

How much does a wedding cost in Iowa?
About $21,000 on average, according to The Knot's state data as reported by SoFi in 2026. The national average is $34,200 (The Knot 2026 Real Weddings Study of couples married in 2025). Iowa weddings cost less than most states, and your total depends mostly on your guest count.
How should we split our wedding budget?
Start with the venue and food. Together they are about half of most budgets. Then photography, flowers and decor, music, and attire. Keep about 4% aside for surprises. Use the calculator on this page, then fine-tune it in the free budget planner.
How much does a wedding cost per guest?
Divide your total by your guest count. Nationally it works out to roughly $290 per guest (The Knot data reported by SoFi: $292 per guest, 117 guests on average). Every guest you remove saves food, drinks, rentals, invitations and favors.
What are the easiest ways to save on an Iowa wedding?
Trim the guest list first. Pick a Friday, Sunday or winter date (September and October Saturdays are Iowa's busiest and priciest). Ask what your venue already includes (tables, chairs, linens). Choose in-season flowers. Compare at least two vendors in each category.
